Come Away With Me
Her swagger was my first clue that Kelly would not be my typical borderline patient. Dr. Rosen’s referral note suggested psychotherapy for a moderately depressed forty-two year old woman in the beginning stages of menopause. I politely introduced myself and motioned for my new patient to choose either the couch or chair next to a round table. Kelly carefully positioned her hands on both knees as she took the couch directly in front of me. She looked much younger than her stated age, the result of LA’s finest plastic surgeons. Absent were crow’s feet, goose-neck skin, and sagging breasts. A tummy tuck was also possible or she lived on a treadmill. The hair was short, with bleached wisps curled over both ears, each studded with a one-carat diamond earring.
